HARJ Dhesi's extra-time free kick earned Brakes
a place in the President's Cup round three draw at the New Windmill on
Saturday.
The influential defender capped a commanding performance with his
103rd-minute winner, which he curled around the wall from 35 yards after a
foul on Paul Eden. Midfielder Nick Mort had begun the job, cancelling out
Knowle's first-half goal with a headed equaliser after 65 minutes.
Runners-up in the division and Cup last season, Knowle looked a strong
side and were good value for their lead, scored on the breakaway after 13
minutes. They kept up the pressure, with Brakes playing the long-ball game
and struggling for a breakthrough.
The home side improved after the break and began passing the ball well.
Steve Thompson and Baz Shearsby both went close Mort equalised, heading
powerfully home from a Thompson corner. Brakes were on top after that, but
keeper Richard Morris remained busy.
Extra time started at a furious pace, with Thompson and Josh Blake running
hard at the Knowle defence. Dhesi provided the breakthrough from the set
piece, a goal as damaging to Knowle's morale as it was crucial for
Leamington's.
Co-manager Jason Cadden said: "We were terrbile in the first half but
we improved a lot after the break. In the end we got through thatnks to a
solid, workman-like performance and an excellent free kick from Harj."
